THE CABLE CENTER
Two design team artworks for a corporate headquarters and museum
Denver, Colorado
This design team project resulted in two works of art for the National Cable Television Center and Museum. The new headquarters for the Cable Industry called for a signature entrance sculpture as well as a terrazzo floor designs for their Great Hall lobby.
By utilizing an artist on the design team for the Cable Center, RNL Architects was able to fully express the corporate culture and visionary character of the Cable Television and Broadband Industry. Two opportunities for incorporating art were realized. The "Earth Station" sculpture was designed as a signature element for the exterior of the facility, and the floor design "Cable Navigation" expressed the influence of Cable technology on global communication.
The "Earth Station" stands 24 feet tall on a landscaped plaza in front of the Center. Inspired by the forms of "head end" "earth station" cable facilities, where huge disks receive satellite communications, this sculpture celebrates the futuristic technology and ambitious vision of the Industry. Built of Aluminum and fiberglass, the complex fabrication and compound curves utilized the boat building techniques of specialty contractors in Newport, Rhode Island.
"Cable Navigation" is an 8,500 square foot floor design in six colors of terrazzo. This abstracted map of the world was inspired by the maps of ancient mariners, who used compass lines to connect distant continents. The lines in the updated version for the Cable Center reveal the interconnectedness provided by Cable technology, suggesting the contribution that Cable has made by expanding opportunities in a shrinking world.
