FLORA NOVA
Lobby sculpture for a technology center on a college campus
Yakima, Washington

This design was inspired by the activities in the Deccio Center, a campus technology facility and hub for interactive distance learning. The piece celebrates the open-ended capacity of technology as well as its far-reaching impact.

"Flora Nova" is a freestanding, floor-mounted piece that sits inside the distinctive "prow" of the new building. The sculpture takes advantage of this architectural highlight, reaching up into this space to capture and transform the bounty of light.

The design takes the shape of a fountain, except that this is a fountain of technology and light instead of water. Diaphanous metal leaves capture and transform the character of natural light in this bright corner of the building. These water-jet cut aluminum figures incorporate a special dichroic acrylic material in numerous windows. This dichroic acrylic changes color and light transmission with the changing qualities of light in the building.
