HOOP DANCE
Wall installation for a parking entrance to a new City Center development
Englewood, Colorado

HOOP DANCE is a celebration of the City of Englewood, acknowledging the City's past and anticipating its future. This abstract metal and neon design honors the City of Englewood by portraying its qualities of vitality, growth, and opportunity. The movement and motion expressed in the sculpture reflects on Englewood as a visionary transit-oriented community with a bright and speedy future.

The Englewood community developed because of transit systems, and it grew and prospered because of the ever increasing convenience and speed of those system. First horse-drawn trolleys, then street cars, and finally the automobile brought people down Broadway and Santa Fe into the new City of Englewood. Now Englewood is entering a new era thanks to the speed and convenience of Light Rail.

HOOP DANCE was designed with Light Rail users and Santa Fe drivers in mind. It is meant to be seen from a passing train or a moving car. The speed and movement of the car or train, at different times of day and night, provide for a wide variety of views of the metal and neon sculpture. The piece is also designed to have its own sense of movement, appearing to travel across the face of the parking structure as passengers and motorists whiz by in their vehicles. The total effect is to reinforce the importance of transportation for the City of Englewood, calling attention to the City's rapid advancement into the future.
